I think it’s pretty obvious what this edition of The Weekly was going to be about. But rather than go livid about the game itself or how pathetic the embarassment is, I’m going to rant about the fallout.
Now that we’ve had a couple days to digest what happened, it’s safe to say that this game was not blown out of proportion when it was called the greatest upset in college football history. Despite the fact that there is still a consensus around the nation that Michigan is a great team that was simply woefully unprepared, the reputation of the University as a whole has been underminded. The team could run the table, go 11-1, win the Big Ten, and have Mike Hart rush for 2,500 yards, yet there will still be the Appalachian Chants at every game. There will still be highlights of that game shown on every top plays show for years to come (a ‘la Kordell Stewart in 1994).
The tide has turned, Lloyd’s invincibility has disappeared along with Bo. The demand for the new head coach will no longer be whether they can maintain the integrity of the program, but rather, can they win with the incredible talent we always have. Can they stop the underacheiving? Can we return to being the Leaders and the Best?
I don’t know. I honestly am still reeling. I feel like when I talk about my alma mater, I am speaking of a passed relative and recounting the good times while slowly coming to grips with it’s passing into the night. I know there’s 11 games still to play in this season, but this loss will live on well past this season.
